TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Long Island University, LIU POST                (Present)
Assistant Professor of Photography, Art Department/SVPA
Graduate Seminar Course: The goal of the Graduate Seminar course is to present MFA students a wide range of articles, essays and critical discussions that run parallel, intersects, surrounds and influences art. This course provides students to look at their practice as artists with models of identity/personae and how they identify themselves as producers as well a framework for graduate students to understand the interrelationship between art, philosophy and criticism that bond art and theory.

History of Photography: This course helps students develop an understanding of photography in a historical and developmental context to the path of understanding contemporary art practices. This course covers the invention and development of photography as an image technology and an artistic medium. Through assigned readings, written exercises, lectures and discussion, students explore the mutual influence of photography and other art forms, and the relationship of technique to photographic form in a multitude of processes, from the nineteenth century daguerreotype to images produced with contemporary 35mm and DSLR cameras.

Location Flash Photography: Students use digital and/or analog photography to explore aspects of the use of light and color as applied to the fashion, editorial, advertising and location photography. On- and off-camera electronic flash, tungsten light, and daylight are utilized as light sources as we explore how digital and analog photography record color, and how the mixing of different color light waves can create new and unique effects, which can help students think about new creative strategies.

Digital Photography & Photoshop: The purpose of this course is to increase photographic skills through the use of the computer and the Photoshop program as parallel tools in the photographic process for non-media study majors. A variety of conceptual approaches and technical skills are introduced to familiarize students with technical aspects of the computer and software by giving them a broad understanding of this continuously changing technology.

Foundation Level Photography Courses: Digital Photography & Photoshop courses to first-year students who are beginning the LIU art program. The photography foundation courses are part of broad range of art courses offered at LIU. The courses are designed to provide students with the experience, skills and tools to gain a broad understanding of art production before deciding on an area concentration for further study.

Graduate Project Adviser: Support students in the development of their thesis projects and ways of applying art theory and conceptual practice toward these projects.  Conduct weekly meetings with students.

Webster University, Leiden, The Netherlands            (2012-2013)

Senior Overview: Students are expected to create conceptual practices in Media Art (photography, video or Web based projects) for final portfolio exhibitions. The main goals are to help students understand and use theory and conceptual practices as parallel tools to the technical media skills they have acquired, and to create written and visual materials for their final projects for exhibition and portfolio presentation in the campus gallery.
Digital Photography & Photoshop: The purpose of this course is to increase photographic skills through the use of the computer and the Photoshop program as parallel tools in the photographic process. A variety of conceptual approaches and technical skills are introduced to familiarize students with technical aspects of the computer and to give them a broader understanding of the software. Students are expected to create a project that reflects their creative interests. In this class the student’s focus is on portfolio development. Special attention is given to synthesizing conceptual ideas and technical skills of using the camera and the computer (Photoshop), within the context of a deeper contemporary and theoretical exploration of creating art.

Foundations of Color Photography: Students employed digital and analog color films to explore the aspects and attributes of color as applied to the fashion, editorial, advertising, and fine arts areas of the photography industry.  Electronic flash, tungsten light, and daylight were utilized as light sources in the exploration of how digital and analog photography record color and light.
Digital Photography & Photoshop: The purpose of this course was to increase photographic skills through the use of the computer and the Photoshop program as parallel tools in the photographic process. A variety of conceptual approaches and technical skills were introduced to familiarize students with technical aspects of the computer and to give them a broader understanding of this ever-changing technology.
Pre-College Program: Through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, high school students can take university-level courses to prepare them for applying to college and a possible profession in photography. Taught courses such as Digital Photography & Photoshop, Digital Camera Use for Beginners, and courses designed to provide students with skills and tools in the medium.
